Just was looking at a story on a political progblog, but this rant has nothing to do with the content. Instead, see this screen shot, carefully chosen just to display the text fonts and styling:

What is up with this sudden fashion of doing web sites with text in little sans serif characters in about 50 percent gray on a 10 percent gray background? That layout is just one step from being frank steganography.
Designers, here’s a hint: if you want your blog to be read, you need some contrast between foreground and background.

Mrph. If the text is big enough and the screen is reasonably bright, I actually find that low-contrast layout a lot easier on the eyes than black-on-white. Staring at text printed on a lightbulb does have its effect.
(That’s IF the text is big enough, though. Also, there’s so much variation between monitors that it’s a little dangerous – I find your example easy to read, and you probably would if you were using my monitor settings, but mine are customized and most people are probably seeing less contrast than I am.)
Well, for work I go old-school and use gold on black. But with bigger fonts and such it’s better, I agree.
People who use white-on-black for body text – or worse, fluorescently-saturated-colors-on-black – must die, of course.
In a blog perhaps. A nice amber on a black background is very comforting while writing code or text in big chunks.
